The premiere of Bet introduces us to the electrifying world of Miku Martineau in Bet as she steps into the role of Yumo, a cunning gambler with a mission. The opening scene sets the tone as Yumo, while serving detention, casually wins a gambling round — just in time for the principal to walk in and catch her in the act. Without hesitation, she’s expelled. But the twist? It’s exactly what she wanted.
Her guardian picks her up and confirms the next destination: St. Dominics, an elite institution where money equals power and teachers have no say. The expulsion, as it turns out, was a calculated move by Yumo to obscure her past from prying eyes.
St. Dominics: Where Students Rule
Upon arriving at St. Dominics, Yumo quickly realizes that she’s stepped into a world unlike any other. The student council rules with absolute authority, not the faculty. Ryan, a fellow student, introduces the major players: Dori, Mary, influencer Suki, Riri, and the reigning student council president, Kira. The school’s board — made up of parents — actively supports the vicious competition, with Kira’s father running the board and enabling his son’s control over the school.
Yumo makes herself at home by making a bet with her roommate, Blake: by the end of the day, Blake will willingly switch beds with her. It’s Yumo’s way of making sure everyone knows she plays to win — even in the smallest of things.
The Duel With Mary
Soon after, Yumo boldly challenges Mary, a member of the student council, to a gambling duel. Ryan and Michael — a quiet student who steers clear of gambling — warn her not to. Meanwhile, Ryan himself has just lost a game to Mary, who manipulates her way to victory by stealthily switching cards. Her win means Ryan becomes her “house pet,” a debtor forced to serve her whims.
In the hallway, Ryan meets a newcomer named Yuki and explains how the school revolves around gambling. Students bet their monthly allowances, and the top ten earn spots on the student council — marked by sleek black jackets.
Yumo Outsmarts the Cheater
The high-stakes game between Yumo and Mary begins, with a crowd gathered. Flashbacks reveal Yumo’s early exposure to gambling, trained by her mother who taught her that gambling should be fun. In the present, Yumo catches Mary using Ryan to cheat — he’s standing behind Yuki and unintentionally signaling card values.
Yumo turns the tables by raising the stakes to $100,000 and promising Ryan half the winnings if she triumphs. Mary loses, and Yumo refuses to claim a house pet. Instead, she frees Ryan from Mary’s control, flipping the power dynamic instantly.
Flashbacks and Final Moves
Later that evening, Blake — true to the wager — switches beds with Yumo, impressed by her prowess. Ryan visits Yumo’s room to talk, and in a haunting flashback, we see the tragic memory that fuels her obsession: Yumo’s parents were murdered in a car explosion she witnessed as a child. As the episode closes, Yumo declares her chilling intent: “I’m playing for blood.”
