Annie’s Appointment as MBC Gayo Daejejeon MC Sparks Heated Debate
Public opinion is in turmoil following the announcement that Annie (The Black Label) will be replacing Girls’ Generation’s Yoona as the host of MBC Gayo Daejejeon — a role Yoona has held for 10 consecutive years. The controversy, now widely discussed online, centers on Annie’s rookie status, as she only debuted five months ago, raising questions about fairness and experience.
The Black Label revealed on the 21st, “Annie has been selected as an MC for MBC Gayo Daejejeon,” confirming that she will co-host the high-profile year-end show alongside SHINee’s Choi Minho, who is returning for his third consecutive year. Yoona, known for her polished and professional stage presence, had long been considered the face of the event, earning consistent praise for her poise and charisma since 2015.
Once news broke that Annie would succeed Yoona, reactions online were immediate and divided. Critics accused the network and The Black Label of favoritism, calling it “preferential treatment” to appoint a complete newcomer with no prior music show MC experience. Others defended the decision, suggesting that Annie’s group Allday Project — one of this year’s most buzzworthy rookie acts — represents a symbolic shift toward the next generation of idols.

Annie’s background also fueled further discussion. A Columbia University graduate with a degree in Art History and Visual Arts, she made her debut this June with Allday Project, gaining attention through the double title tracks “FAMOUS” and “WICKED.” Despite her achievements, online discourse continues to highlight her wealthy family background, labeling her as “Shinsegae’s granddaughter” and a “fourth-generation chaebol idol.”
Now, the main question is whether Annie can overcome the MBC Gayo Daejejeon controversy by proving her skills on the live stage this December 31st. While many remain skeptical, others are curious to see if she can deliver a fresh and confident performance that justifies her selection.
Ironically, amid all the debate, the program itself may be benefiting — with public attention and anticipation higher than ever before this year’s broadcast.
