Korea Hit by Severe Cold Wave as Temperatures Plunge Nationwide
The expansion of a Siberian weather front over the Korean Peninsula has triggered a sharp nationwide temperature drop, bringing one of the coldest spells of the winter. The Korea cold wave weather intensified on Tuesday as temperatures in Seoul fell to minus 13 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest reading recorded this winter season.
A cold wave advisory has been issued across most regions of the country, including the capital. Weather authorities declare a cold wave alert when morning temperatures are expected to drop into double-digit negatives for at least two consecutive days. Morning lows nationwide are currently ranging between minus 17 and minus 2 degrees Celsius, while daytime highs are forecast to remain between minus 4 and 7 degrees.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Seoul experienced a particularly sharp temperature decline compared to the previous day, with wind chill values plunging to minus 8 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists warned that the biting cold will persist through the weekend, urging the public to remain cautious of icy road conditions.

Looking ahead, Wednesday morning lows are forecast to range between minus 17 and minus 4 degrees nationwide. Temperatures are expected to drop even further on Thursday, with lows between minus 19 and minus 5 degrees. While the cold wave is projected to ease beginning next Monday, temperatures are still likely to remain below seasonal averages.
Emergency services across the country have issued warnings about frozen water pipes and cold-related illnesses, including frostbite and hypothermia, advising residents to take necessary precautions during the prolonged cold spell.
