EXO’s charismatic Kai has finally returned, unleashing his highly-anticipated fourth solo mini-album, “Wait On Me”!
Today, April 21st, the idol held a press conference, graced by fellow EXO member Suho as the witty MC, to delve into the creation of his latest musical offering. Kai, visibly buzzing with a mixture of excitement and a touch of pre-comeback jitters, kicked off the event by introducing the diverse sonic landscape of his new album. He highlighted the stark contrast between the pre-release track “Adult Swim,” showcasing a completely different allure, and the captivating title track, “Wait On Me.”
Speaking about the B-side track “Walls Don’t Talk,” Kai playfully expressed his hope that fans would feel like they were on a romantic “date” while watching its music video. Suho chimed in, suggesting that the vibrant track “Flight to Paris” would be the perfect addition to any EXO-L’s travel playlist. The anticipation for the title track “Wait On Me” soared as Kai teased its understated charm and the captivating dance break within the performance. Regarding the music video, he shared a memorable filming experience: “There is a part I enjoyed filming where the dancers and I dance while walking down a long hallway,” emphasizing the “cool” feeling of showcasing this fresh performance style.
As Kai geared up for his “Wait On Me” performance showcase, the ever-supportive Suho engaged in playful banter with the reporters, amplifying the excitement for Kai’s stage and even teasing his own upcoming album preparations. He showered praise upon the “world-class Kai,” urging everyone to show immense love for his fourth mini-album, “Wait On Me,” and with a touch of humor, added, “And please show lots of love for me as well.” Following Kai’s mesmerizing performance of “Wait On Me,” Suho’s praise continued, declaring, “It was a great performance—Kai didn’t disappoint.”
When Suho playfully brought up the topic of Kai’s daringly exposed skin in the music video, Kai offered a practical explanation: “With the desert backdrop, [we thought that] if I’m also wearing a lot of clothes, it would feel too hot for the audience, so there was the opinion that I show some skin.” Addressing his iconic status as a “cropped shirt icon,” Kai admitted, “I really enjoy that and that people think of me that way.” He even shared a humorous anecdote, recalling EXO member D.O.’s past remark, “‘Why are you lacking so much fabric?’” Kai then quipped, “It made me think that I should show a side that’s ‘not lacking in fabric’ next time, such as wearing a padded jacket.”
Looking towards future EXO activities, Kai offered a hopeful update: “We are talking with the company on what would be good for EXO. If the opportunity arises, EXO will show up here on stage [like this showcase], so we will talk more with the company.”
Kai also candidly reflected on his meaningful experience working with elderly individuals with Alzheimer’s during his military service, stating, “I did my best as it was what I should do.” He shared heartfelt memories, saying, “I made lots of memories with the elderly, and I learned a lot about Alzheimer’s,” recounting his experiences assisting them in finding their way home and engaging in learning activities. Kai further expressed his artistic aspirations: “I want to show diverse sides of myself as Kai and as Kim Jong In (Kai’s real name). In the past, I simply showed different dances and worked hard to dance on stage, but while preparing for this album, I looked over past performances, and there really isn’t any concept I haven’t tried. I think those experiences and working hard are my strengths.”
Reflecting on his longing for the stage, Kai revealed, “When I missed the stage the most was the two months before the comeback,” describing those weeks as the slowest he’d experienced. He continued with palpable emotion, “Today’s stage was exciting, and I also felt nervous. I thought that I should have done even better. I feel grateful that I can have this thought. I realized that I really love being on stage.” When asked about junior artists who have cited him as a role model, Kai expressed sincere gratitude and shared his desire for future collaborations. He specifically mentioned NCT WISH, revealing that they recently filmed a dance challenge together, adding, “I really enjoy listening to their music.”
Finally, Kai ignited excitement for his upcoming solo tour, “KAION.” He shared his heartfelt anticipation, “I’m using the concert as an excuse to see fans around the world. Rather than fans waiting for me, I think I waited to see the fans more. Through the tour, it will be great to compare whose love is greater.” As a tantalizing spoiler for the tour, Kai hinted at the possibility of performing a medley of EXO’s iconic songs, putting his own unique spin on a tradition his fellow members have previously embraced during their solo concerts.
