Hunter with the Scalpel Brings a Dark New Entry into the K-Thriller Genre
The Korean thriller landscape is about to get darker with the arrival of The Hunter with the Scalpel (메스를 든 사냥꾼). Created by LG U+ STUDIO X+U, this upcoming series combines psychological tension with tight, cinematic storytelling. Written by Jo Han-young and directed by Lee Jung-hoon, the Hunter with the Scalpel K-drama offers 16 midform episodes (20–30 minutes each), set to premiere on June 16 via U+tv, U+mobiletv, and Disney+ (in select regions).
A Daughter’s Hunt and a Serial Killer’s Game
At the center of this chilling narrative is Seo Se-hyun (Park Joo-hyun), a sharp-witted but emotionally guarded forensic pathologist. During a standard autopsy, she uncovers evidence pointing to her father—believed dead—as the perpetrator of a new string of killings.
That father, Yoon Jo-gyun (Park Yong-woo), is a deeply intelligent, remorseless killer who begins to taunt his daughter with cryptic, violent messages. As Se-hyun struggles to stay one step ahead of both her father and the police, she faces the overwhelming weight of her past and a bloodline steeped in horror.
Standing between them is Detective Jeong Jung-hyun (Kang Hoon), head of the homicide unit. Unaware of the personal stakes involved, he finds himself tangled in a complex investigation that forces him to confront uncomfortable truths.
Scars, Secrets, and a Symbolic Poster
The main poster for the series hints at the inner trauma and layered conflict within the story. Styled to resemble stitched flesh, the artwork draws a haunting parallel between forensic science and emotional pain.
- Park Joo-hyun gazes outward with icy resolve, her expression straddling fear and determination.
- Park Yong-woo delivers an eerie “shhh” gesture—suggesting control, manipulation, and hidden truths.
- Kang Hoon’s intense gaze hints at a detective driven by justice, yet increasingly haunted by what he uncovers.
The tagline, “Dad’s murder has begun again,” teases a cyclical tale of bloodshed and psychological warfare, where justice is more personal than procedural.
Cannes Series Recognition Before Premiere
Even before airing, the Hunter with the Scalpel K-drama gained global attention. It was officially invited to the “Rendezvous” category of the 8th Cannes International Series Festival (Canneseries), an honor reserved for standout international projects.
