May he rest in peace. The recent death of former soccer player Kang Ji Yong has brought renewed attention to his emotional appearance on the Korean reality show “Divorce Camp” earlier this year. On the show, Kang bravely opened up about his long-standing financial struggles and the mental toll they had taken on him and his marriage.
Kang revealed that he had allowed his father to manage his salary from 2009 to 2019. However, despite marrying and having a child, he never received the money he earned over the course of a decade. His wife shouldered the financial burden of their family alone, covering expenses for their move, childbirth, and hospital stays. He also shared that his parents, who were living comfortably in a large apartment, refused to return his money, claiming they had none left.
After retiring from professional soccer, Kang worked at a chemical manufacturing plant but struggled daily, arguing with his wife about finances.
“My wish is to die in my sleep. I have everything ready in my car. Everything. I was so stressed because I was working hard, but it broke my will. That’s why I’m like this,”

Many were shocked to learn that Kang was the cousin of singer Kwon Eunbi, former member of IZ*ONE. He had openly supported her during her appearance on Produce 48 in 2018, even encouraging fans to vote for her. Kwon Eunbi also mentioned him during a 2023 radio interview, proudly sharing that her cousin had played for Pohang, Gangwon, and Bucheon.
Sadly, Kang Ji Yong passed away on April 22, with the cause of death not officially disclosed. His funeral is scheduled for April 25.
Fans and netizens alike are mourning the loss, while expressing sympathy over his past struggles and emotional burden. His story has reignited conversations about mental health, financial transparency within families, and post-retirement support for athletes in Korea.
