Lee Jung-jae Channels Squid Game Spirit on Variety Show
Lee Jung-jae, best known internationally as Contestant 456 from Squid Game, recently brought his signature intensity to the May 4 episode of MBC’s variety show Fresh Off the Sea 2. While fans may associate him with high-stakes drama and survival games, this appearance showed a completely different, lighthearted side of the actor.
In the episode, Lee joins cast members Yum Jung-ah, Park Joon-myeon, Lim Ji-yeon, and Lee Jae-wook for a pocket money mission filled with nostalgic childhood games. One of the games—ddakji—bears a striking resemblance to the memorable scene in Squid Game where his character first gets recruited. As soon as the game began, viewers noted how Lee Jung-jae’s expressions and energy hilariously echoed those of his Squid Game role.

Although he played a desperate, down-on-his-luck character in the Netflix hit, here he was fully energized, competitive, and even a little dramatic—in the best way possible. His ddakji slaps and traditional shoe-kicking techniques surprised not only the audience but also his fellow castmates. Park Joon-myeon quipped that he was “too good” at the game, calling back to the slightly terrifying intensity Lee delivered in Squid Game.
Still, the episode wasn’t all games and competition. Fans also saw the actor smiling freely as he chatted with the cast, shared meals, and snapped a photo by the winter sea. These candid moments offered a warm contrast to the dark, gritty world of Squid Game, reminding viewers of Lee Jung-jae’s range and natural charisma.
With Squid Game Season 2 on the horizon, this variety show appearance has only amplified excitement around his return. His ability to entertain in both scripted and unscripted settings reinforces why Lee Jung-jae remains a global star. For more Korean entertainment news, check out the link below.
