While Liverpool fans prepare for an emotional celebration at Anfield as the club lifts the Premier League trophy for the first time in 30 years in front of a home crowd, work behind the scenes continues on summer transfer business.
With Jurgen Klopp set to hand over the reins, new manager Arne Slot has been praised for smoothly managing the transition. His development of Ryan Gravenberch this season has stood out, highlighting the Dutchman’s coaching quality. But attention is now turning to what will be his first major transfer window in charge.
Last summer, Slot made only one senior signing—Federico Chiesa—while Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is set to join this off-season to replace Caoimhin Kelleher, who is expected to leave. Now, according to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Liverpool are preparing a major midfield move.
The Reds are reportedly “taking a firm step” toward signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, with a €40 million (£34m) bid in the works. The Dutch midfielder is out of contract in 2026, but with Barcelona’s precarious financial situation, the Catalan club could be forced to cash in now rather than risk losing him at a discount—or for free—down the line.
The report notes: “The Anfield side is preparing a €40 million offer to convince FC Barcelona to part ways with one of its technical pillars. The Dutch midfielder, who still has a contract until 2026, is one of the key players in Arne Slot’s plan for his first season in charge of the team.”
Within Barcelona, there is reportedly a “willingness to listen to offers,” particularly if the financial terms are favorable. Despite de Jong’s integral role in Xavi’s squad, the need to raise funds could see the club entertain serious bids.
Liverpool will face stiff competition. Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester City are also said to be monitoring de Jong’s situation closely. However, Slot’s familiarity with Dutch talent and Liverpool’s midfield ambitions could give the Reds a competitive edge.
Securing de Jong would be a statement signing for Liverpool—and potentially a bargain at just £34 million. How Slot would fit him into a midfield that already includes Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Dominik Szoboszlai remains to be seen, but the Dutchman’s control, press resistance, and versatility make him a tempting addition.
As Liverpool enter a new era post-Klopp, they find themselves in the rare position where any top-tier signing is a squad upgrade—not just a replacement.
