Voice actor and broadcaster Seo Yu-ri is facing renewed attention after becoming embroiled in the controversial trend of “Excel Broadcasting,” revealing a precarious personal situation alongside the public scrutiny.
Recently, a video featuring Seo Yu-ri on internet streaming platform SOOP (formerly AfreecaTV) went viral, drawing criticism for its sexually suggestive content. The broadcast, part of the so-called “Excel Broadcasting” trend, involved Seo Yu-ri dancing in a short one-piece dress in a manner that many viewers felt bordered on explicit. Excel Broadcasting refers to a live stream format where female BJs perform provocative content while viewer sponsorship rankings are displayed in real time — a format critics have likened to a “cyber room salon.” The concern has escalated due to the fact that even minors can access such content without adult verification, prompting warnings from child development experts.
In the wake of growing backlash, Seo Yu-ri addressed the situation through her personal social media account. She wrote, “Reality is reality. Isn’t that why you shouldn’t laugh or judge someone for trying to survive?” She added, “I’m not shirking my responsibilities. I didn’t choose this path lightly, but I intend to carry through with it to the end.”
She also opened up about her current struggles: “I’m still working hard through various gigs — voice work for games, TV appearances — but the debt I incurred trying to clean up past issues hasn’t been fully resolved.”
Seo Yu-ri, who was previously married to MBC PD Choi Byung-gil in 2019, went through a divorce last year. She revealed that during the process, she took on a loan dispute related to her ex-husband and ended up repaying more than 1.1 billion KRW (approx. $800,000 USD) on her own. “My ex-husband filed for bankruptcy. I didn’t receive a single won from the settlement. That’s when things got financially difficult,” she said, tearing up during a broadcast while thanking viewers for their support through donations.
“More than anyone, I am responsible for my own life,” Seo said. “Please remember that even one thoughtless comment can ruin someone’s entire day.”
Seo Yu-ri, once beloved for her sharp wit on shows like My Little Television, now finds herself in the middle of controversy tied to an unfamiliar and highly scrutinized space. Despite the backlash, she has remained firm in her stance, continuing to post on social media and stating her intent to pursue legal action against malicious comments.
Public opinion remains divided, and the conversation around Seo Yu-ri’s actions — and the broader implications of Excel Broadcasting — is still ongoing.
