The Manipulated Episode 2: Tae-Joong’s Dark Turn
The Manipulated Episode 2 opens with Tae-joong enduring the bleak monotony of prison life, where every day is a cycle of survival and silent suffering. His routine is interrupted when a public defender named Kim Sang-rak suddenly visits him, explaining that something about the case feels suspicious. Tae-joong reveals one critical detail—the bracelet found at the crime scene wasn’t his because he had dropped his real one in Tae-jin’s room. Sang-rak agrees to check on his brother.
Meanwhile, Tae-joong becomes a target behind bars, dragged before the prison leader Yeo Deok-su and assaulted repeatedly by inmates. When Sang-rak returns, the news is devastating: Tae-jin has taken his own life, leaving behind a note that everything was too overwhelming. The loss shatters Tae-joong, who spirals into multiple suicide attempts.
His turning point comes when Noh Yong-sik, the prison church’s alter server, approaches him with unexpected empathy. Yong-sik encourages him to survive by staying occupied. Slowly, Tae-joong begins rebuilding himself—working out, studying relentlessly, gardening, and even reading the Bible. A montage shows him enduring the beatings but growing stronger, collecting multiple certificates as he educates himself.

Five years pass. Outside the prison, a mysterious man named An Yo-han monitors thousands of surveillance feeds in a setup reminiscent of Professor X. He casually assures someone over the phone that he will “handle” the situation, hinting at a deeper conspiracy.
Back inside, a kind guard chats with Tae-joong and asks him to take care of his plant. Yong-sik then appears with cake and Tae-joong’s bracelet, revealing it’s his last day in prison. Their emotional farewell highlights how much they relied on each other during their darkest years.

As Tae-joong takes over Yong-sik’s role as alter server, a newly arrived inmate is beaten mercilessly. Tae-joong offers him cake and the Bible, and the boy’s story spills out—he was also framed after returning a lost phone. A public defender approached him, and soon after, he learned that his mother had supposedly killed herself. The parallels are too precise to ignore.
The next morning, the young inmate is found dead, having suffocated himself with pages from the Bible. Horrified, Tae-joong calls Kim Sang-rak pretending to have new information. During their tense confrontation, the lawyer essentially admits to killing Tae-jin and the other inmate’s mother as part of a larger setup. After leaving, Sang-rak phones someone and tells them to prepare a “clean up.”
Tae-joong then visits the prison priest and announces he can no longer serve as alter server. In the final shot, he quietly pulls a nail loose from one of the pews—signaling that he’s done suffering and is ready to fight back.
