Typhoon Family Episode 1 Recap: Chaos, Secrets, and a Tragic Twist
Episode 1 of Typhoon Family opens with a glimpse into Typhoon Trading, a thriving local trading company in South Korea currently being filmed for a television feature. The shoot introduces viewers to the bustling office and its employees, including the founder, Kang Jin-young, a man whose life appears as stable as his business.
Meanwhile, Jin-young’s 26-year-old son, Kang Tae-poong, lives a carefree lifestyle. Clad in a leather jacket and an Armani shirt, he heads to a nightclub with his friends. A simple night out takes a chaotic turn when he mistakenly enters the wrong room, where he encounters Yu-rim and her companion, Pyo Hyun-jun — someone he clearly doesn’t get along with. The clash quickly escalates into a fight, landing everyone in the police station.
At Typhoon Trading, the company’s bookkeeper, Oh Mi-seon, is seen struggling to enroll in a geography course at a counseling center. Unfortunately, the class is full, and she ends up registering for earth science instead.

Back at the police station, Jin-young arrives and insists that his son face the consequences of his actions, but Hyun-jun’s father, Pyo Bak-ho — an influential figure and an old acquaintance of Jin-young — steps in and gets all the boys released. The strained father-son relationship deepens as Jin-young scolds Tae-poong harshly, even striking him when he asks for money. Hurt and frustrated, Tae-poong storms off and finds solace in tending plants inside a greenhouse, dancing alone to K-pop music through the night.
The next morning, Tae-poong crafts a flower bouquet and takes the train home, where Oh Mi-seon happens to notice him. When he rushes off, he accidentally leaves one flower behind, which Mi-seon quietly picks up. Back home, Tae-poong gifts the flowers to his mother, while his parents continue to argue about his aimless future.

Later, Tae-poong’s friend Nam-mo convinces him to join a reality dating show as a last-minute replacement for a missing friend named Yun-seong. The show introduces them to four women, including Mi-ho — who is later revealed to be Mi-seon’s younger sister, currently preparing for a flight attendant interview.
At Typhoon Trading, Jin-young celebrates a recent success by rewarding his staff with bonuses. However, a risky new trade deal soon emerges involving an Italian client and a textile firm called Daebang Textile. Tempted by the potential profits, Jin-young agrees to proceed.
Meanwhile, Tae-poong once again crosses paths with Hyun-jun and Yu-rim, reigniting their rivalry. Amid this, rumors circulate about Yun-seong’s family going bankrupt, prompting Tae-poong to visit his friend’s seemingly abandoned home. He finds Yun-seong hiding there, terrified and desperate. Despite his own troubles, Tae-poong gives Yun-seong his money and watch to help him escape.
Later that night, he spots his father dining alone but can’t bring himself to approach him. Back at the greenhouse, Tae-poong proudly shows Nam-mo a new rose variety he’s cultivated — one that could revolutionize the flower market with its color and affordability. He dreams of presenting it to his father one day.
Unfortunately, things at Typhoon Trading take a dire turn when Jin-young learns that a cheque from Gisang Chemical has bounced, leaving the company financially crippled. Exhausted and burdened by the stress, he collapses in his office and is rushed to the hospital.

Elsewhere, Mi-seon sits for her university entrance exams, unaware of the tragedy unfolding. At the hospital, the doctor informs Tae-poong that his father will recover with rest — but before long, Tae-poong receives a page about Hyun-jun causing trouble again, this time dragging Yun-seong into it.
Rushing to the scene, Tae-poong discovers it was all a cruel prank. Hyun-jun wanted to mock him over his family’s financial downfall. Before he can react, Nam-mo bursts in to tell him to hurry back — his father’s condition has worsened.
As South Korea’s financial crisis dominates the news, Tae-poong races to the hospital. But by the time he arrives, it’s too late — his father, Kang Jin-young, has passed away, leaving behind a shattered family and a son burdened with guilt and grief.
